The church in the New Testament was first and foremost a communitynot a building, a religious organization, or a worship service. Members did not just see each other during a Sunday meeting; they actually cared for each other as if they were part of a community from Monday through Saturday.
Members of a community are different from guests. Guests visit and stay for a while, but members are here to stay and are actively involved. Members have responsibilities. We are always glad to host everyone who visits our church, but we are responsible for the spiritual well-being of the members of our church community.
